What was the primary Japanese fighter aircraft opponent of the AVG / Flying Tigers during their 1941 / 42 existence?

77th & 50th Sentai

The following should give you a quick look at 77th Sentai operations. I believe the 50th was sent as reinforcements somewhere around January 1942.

Did they get new models of the P 40 or did just have the same ones they went over with?

They received around 30 P-40Es in April of ‘42.
