For Scott - T-33

Sun May 19, 2019 3:12 am

A few record card decryptions of early T-33/TF-80C: the 'YF-94A' redesignation of 48-879 is interesting and (to me at least) not previously recorded. It appears that this aircraft would have been T-33 forward fuselage and F-94A aft end.

“It appears that this aircraft would have been T-33 forward fuselage and F-94A aft end.”

This is not true as the fuselage rear end is very different. The T-33 and P-80 differ ahead of the fuselage break, but I believe the T-33A rear fuselage portion that donates when the engine is changed is the Same as a P-80C. Nothing from an F-94 will fit.

The fuselage is better described as a unit from tailcone break to the forward doors. Any type of nose can be fitted, 6 gun, 4 gun/2 gun, trainer or photo recon nose. That fuselage is different for the P-80 and T-33 by adding some inches to lengthen it near the trailing edge of the wing and the forward area near the intakes. It’s subtle. The F-94 prototype at Lackland I believe is one of the TF-80c prototypes as well, so it’s modifications and changes are best visible there. They share a lot of parts, as the general systems are the same. The T-33 is extraordinarily tough, so structurally they share a lot too. But the only way to really tell is to take out the F-94 parts book and compare with the T-33 one.

Well somehow it went from being a T-33 (TF-80C) to a YF-94A and back to T-33 again in a small space of time. I can't see why else Allison would want a YF-94A-configured aircraft?

actually I think that this is more of a paperwork shuffle than an actual changing of configuration or parts. I’m not sure and will look at it again.

I would say that from what I see the plane was redesignated as an ET-33A exempting it from any applicable fleetwide tech orders. Then the YF-94A, then back to ET-33 and still different from other T-33’s. I hate to say it, but we need a photograph of the plane! I haven’t been able to find one, and this is a pretty good wild goose for the Sunday Mr. Q!

Regards

Joe

The original Forgotten Jets listing didn't have a photo, but it did mention it was a chase plane at Edwards AFB - maybe a place to start looking?

This isn't going to be much help, but...

I remember a thread a few years ago about a museum that accepted a "hybrid" F-94 with a T-33 nose. I thought it was on Forgotten Jets before WIX became the caretaker. I have searched, but can't find the thread. Somebody with better internet search skills may find it...

The fuselage of 48-373, the second YF-94A was for sale on EBay a couple months back...
The early ones seem to be based on early T-33 airframes...basically the wing and center fuselage....with a new tail cone section to carry the afterburner, which at that point was just an afterburner equipped J33....most of the production A models got upgraded to B models due to issues with the afterburner....
The C model was very different...New wing and tail with a J48....
