Any info/pic.s of Canso CF-IEE in Quebec Lake ?

So I've often read about a Canadian Canso CF-IEE that sank ( in a storm ?) in a lake in the very northern area of Quebec ? The only info I get on line is that, yes, it sank there, but it is " Damage beyond Repair. " are there pic.s of it underwater ? It sank in 1970 ! Thanks in advance, WIXers who are In the Know ! geek

Interesting question Tony. CF-IEE was originally a PBY-5A , US Navy BuNo 34012, c/n 1566. My understanding is that whilst leased to Northland Airlines Ltd of Winnipeg, MB, it was damaged in a storm and sank at Sugluk, PQ on an unknown date some time after June 1970. It was subsequently re-floated and after useful parts were removed it was scuttled. The wreck was apparently still visible as late as 1983. The intriguing part of the story is that the identity '34012' seems to have been subsequently appropriated for another aircraft.

Thanks David, It's a living mystery ( only living underwater !) Maybe in this "Drone" era, some aeronautical archaeologist ( :shock:

) will dare to venture out in the area ( Summer time for sure !) & add a few pieces to this puzzle ! geek

Thank you for the history and now further questions....

Plane was P-6 and while the dates don’t match a VP-92 P-6 is listed as the plane that finished off U-135 on 15 July 1943. Do you know the identity of that one if that pervious “P-6” aircraft was replaced by this one? I almost thought we may have another U-Boat killer....here is a shot from P-6 on 15 July....

Joe - according to the notes I have, the VP-92 Catalina bearing plane number 92-P-6 that was involved in the destruction of U-135 by Royal Navy ships HMS Rochester, HMS Mignonette and HMS Balsam was PBY-5A BuNo 7295. There had been one previous 'P-6, that being BuNo 7249 (lost in May 1942), and of course, as you say, BuNo 34012 was a subsequent 'P-6.

Rob, Please do! The Catalina is currently very “HOT” and is finally generating the interest she deserves which is remarkable in light of the ones we have lost to neglect recently.

There will be a day where a remote recovery of a PBY will be the only way to get one!

Does anyone have coordinates of where it’s supposed to be? I used to work for an airline in Salluit (Sugluk), I can see if some of the pilots can keep an eye out for it.

I had never heard of this wreck, only a Canso near Kuujjuarapik, Quebec. We do have some photos of that one.
