DC-3's, a B-25 and an SBD of the "Bomber Barons Airliners" parked on a runway with military combat aircraft on the island of Samar, the Philippines c 1945.
The Bomber Barons Airliners was used to ferry personnel & supplies to and from the 5th Bomb Group.
The 'Bomber Barons' were one of the more famous bomb groups assigned to the Pacific Theater. In action from day one, 5th BG B-17s - and later B-24s - would range over the Pacific.
The first Bomber Baron loss came on 7 December 1941 when 5th BG B-18s and B-17s were strafed by Japanese fighters at Pearl Harbor. Following action at Midway and Australia, the Group, assigned to the 7th AF, saw combat at Guadalcanal. In March 1943, now part of the 13th AF, Group Fortresses were replaced by Liberators but action continued non-stop, the scene of action shifting to New Guinea, Borneo and later the Philippines.
