B-50D Superfortress Crew Position Photos Wanted

Tue Feb 18, 2020 4:34 pm

Can anyone help with good photos of the crew positions for the B-50D Superfortress (not B-29)?
There’s one or two photos on the internet for the pilot and co-pilot positions but I’m particularly looking for the flight engineer / navigator / radar operator positions.
Thanks in advance.

B-50 (Air Force) Legends by Geoffrey Hays might have what you're looking for. I have a copy.....somewhere in the book case. I do recall it having pictures of the FE panel.
Evidently there were several versions of the FE panel depending upon model and mission of the aircraft.

Google search shows Amazon has the book.

I do not recall paying THAT much for the book......

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I’ve got that book already, very enjoyable, but although its good I’m really looking for some clearer images.

Gotcha...No worries. No, the pictures in the book are not the best. I just double checked the AF museum website to see if their B50 was on the virtual tour yet. Nope.
Sheesh, you can see the cockpits of just about everything they have EXCEPT the B50.

Good luck in your quest.

Yep, compared to the well known B-29 the poor ole B-50 is still somewhat overlooked even in the US, and finding decent photos of the cockpit and crew positions is extremely hard - even harder here in the UK.

But the Geoffrey Hayes book was at least a start!

Get a hold of Jamesintucson here as he is the curator for the Pima Air and Space museum. They refurbished their B-50 a couple years ago, ask him if he has any.

These are "allegedly" B-50B interior shots. I have a B-50 folder full of additional pics.

Thank you for the images, Mark, sadly those are the ones I already have. But some others of similar quality would be much appreciated!

No problem! I'll scan some additional shots and post them as well. I have plenty of exterior photos in my files, but the OP is more interested in interior views.

Mark, as I’m becoming a bit of a fan of the type then please feel to post any B-50 photos.

Looks like it's a D-model. Per Baugher:
Joe Baugher wrote:(49-)307 modified Dec 1955 to RB-50D configuration under Project Dream Boat by TEMCO and delivered to 7406th Support Squadron in May 1956. At one point it was equipped with a cable and winch to test feasibility of towing a fighter. To 2704th Aircraft Storage and Disposition Group (AMC), Davis Monthan AFB May 1960. Dropped from inventory as surplus Jun 1960

Planes of Fame had fitted out much of their B-50 fuselage, but I think it has been in storage since for many years. If you are ever in Chino, you might want to inquire.
