I've been looking through some old aviation magazines recently and have come across a number of advertisements for instructional books. Here are a few examples:

Ronald Press Company Books (1931)
(Source: Aero Digest)

Funk & Wagnalls Company Books (1940)
(Source: Popular Aviation)

Pitman Publishing Corporation Books (1942)

Although 18 out of the 41 are repeats from the above, here's a list from a magazine simply called Fly:

Even though half of these have already been mentioned above, I figured it would still be useful to reproduce this list because it groups them under a single publisher:

Charles Griffin and Company Books (1916)
(Source: The Aeroplane)

I also came across a listing of all of the Government Publications on Aeronautics. I'm not going to transcribe the list here because there's at least 700 of them, but, should you wish to read through them yourself, you can find a complete run from 1920 to 1935 on HathiTrust in the Air Service Information Circular and Air Corps Information Circular catalog records.

While reading through more old aviation magazines, I found a 1924 advertisement for a book titled A History of Aeronautics. It is quite large, with a total of 521 pages! With that level of detail - and such a relatively early publication date - I imagine it would be quite the useful reference on the early history of aviation from a time when it was literally still being written.

While looking for more entries for the post above, I came across an article about a young man that reminded me much of myself. Ernest Robischon built up a collection of 1,000+ aviation books and 4,000 to 5,000 magazines - apparently including many historically significant and rare items - by 1940. I wonder what happened to his collection and if it survives today? (A similar effort called the Institute of Aeronautical History that began around 1927 ended up at the Honnold/Mudd Library Special Collection and Archives.) Another article I ran into details the collection of the Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences (today the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics), which, in 1941, was made up of 10,000 "aeronautical books, magazines, reports, pamphlets, photographs and clippings". Finally, very similar to the Aeronautical and Space Serial Publications: A World List published in 1962 by the Library of Congress that was used to help create a previous post, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics published a Bibliography of Aeronautics until at least 1936. This is not to be confused with an similar document published by the IAeS, in cooperation with the Works Progress Administration, also titled the Bibliography of Aeronautics, that was completed in 1941. It is likely this is the direct result of the Aeronautical Index mentioned in the magazine article above.

Going back to the subject of manuals and technical publications covered in the first page of this thread, I recently learned of the "Air Forces Manual" series (note the "s" on "Forces"):

Air Forces Manuals

Note that No. 6 has a similar title to TM 1-232. Also contrasting copies of Survival available from Google Books and HathiTrust show how the designation sequence changed for the manuals. Though otherwise identical, the former is identified as "Air Forces Manual No. 21", while the latter is "AAF Manual 64-0-1". It is important to point out that: 1) this does not appear to be related to the transition from USAAF to USAF, as both are identified as being an "Army Air Forces" manual, and 2) there is no correlation between the old and new numbers, as "21" has become "64-0-1". Instead, based on the title page of a copy of Aircraft Accident Investigator's Handbook, it appears the newer designations come from the regulation that authorized them. (In this case, "AAF Manual No. 62-1" and "AAF Reg. 62-14", respectively.) This is similar to the relationship between AAF circulars/regulations and forms. Interestingly, one of these redesignations, in this case "No. 26" to "AAF Manual 25-0-2" appears in the same 1941-1942 Supplement to the United States Government Publications Monthly Catalog as a bunch of the other publications listed under the old sequence - suggesting the change over started around this time.

EDIT (22-12-06): Add entry and link for No. 41.
EDIT (23-05-11): Add link and remove reference for No. 45.

The Civil Aeronautics Board published a series of "Safety Bulletins" in the late 1940s that resemble the "Sense" pamphlets produced during and after the war. Also, much like the Civil Aeronautics Bulletins mentioned in a previous post, there is a good chance they were used by military as well as civilian pilots. Therefore, while they are not military manuals, their close stylistic and chronological association makes them worthy of inclusion here:

Safety Bulletins

As an aside, between the above, the Flat-Hatting Sense, and the related training film, it's interesting how many times the topic of buzzing, flat hatting, or whatever you may call it, comes up. I know that showing off through low level flight is something that existed for a long time before World War II and will continue to for as long a pilots take to the air, but the regularity with which it was addressed makes it seem like it had become a serious problem. However, I guess that's the reason that buzz codes were implemented. (Also, on a somewhat related note, a shameless plug for the excellent website "USAAF Training Aircraft Fuselage Codes of World War II" by WIX's very own jdvoss.[1])

I also came across two very similar pamphlet by the same author as the above. However, they're technically part of a different series, so I have listed them separately:

Safety Studies

The following may be part of the Practical Manuals series mentioned in a previous post, but until I find evidence otherwise, I will include them here:

McGraw-Hill Books

Books by Bert A. Shields
  • Introductory Aviation Series
    • Shields, Bert A. Principles of Flight. Introductory Aviation. New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1942.
    • Principles of Air Navigation[1]
    • Principles of Aircraft Engines[1]
    • Principles of Aviation Meteorology[1]
  • Other

Monographs

Other Books

While searching for entries for the above sections, I came across three sets of 50-issue aviation readers published around 1930 by an organization called the "Junior Air Service of America":

The organization was founded by a man named Rex Martin. It seems to be connected to a later organization called the "American Technical Society" as the latter features books authored by Mr. Martin that are noted as being "formerly published by the Junior Air Service of America". There are four of the aforementioned books, and their titles all begin with "Flight":

EDIT (22-04-07): Added 2 additional entries to the monographs section.
