What is especially remarkable is that not only does the museum get to display a few remarkable aircraft, with great local historical significance, but then there is the story of the interesting man who saved them. On top of that, there are a few aircraft left over that will be restored to fly. Something for everyone!

They are original P-40 wheels and tyres, but not off Gloria. The first things to go at the scrap yard were those, the canopies and the chin cowls. The wheels / tyres were used on the farms, the canopies for green houses and the chin cowls for dog kennels

They did however come out of John's shed.....

Dave

Thanks for that Dave, I have just finished reading the article in Classic Wings about John’s Collection, what a man. Great that he stashed all that stuff away.
Regarding the wheels and tyres going into agricultural use, there are still trailers over here with old aircraft wheels on them at some of the small farms. Guess at the time they were two a penny and it was better to use them than scrap them, at least they are still extant.

Team de Havilland had a big day to day, the Mosquito fuselage and wing was rejoined. It has been almost four months since it was separated and moved over to Omaka where a dedicated team have been carrying out the required repairs and painting to the time capsule WWII fighter bomber, recovered by John Smith, his father and brother (who was there today) from RNZAF Woodbourne back in 1956 - saving it from the axe.
A bit of work to do still, before it will be ready for display on long term loan to the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre.

My magazine took until 2 February to get to Perth Western Australia PAR AVION AIR.
This is slow but good as I have something to read tonight given we have gone back into COVID lockdown for the week (hopefully).

Maybe I should dial back my criticism of NZ Post, seems OZ Post is much worse!

Anyway, hope it is worth the wait....
