Dc3 spinners

Mon Dec 28, 2020 2:04 am

Watching a old documentary there was a DC3 with small spinners, that's something I personally have not seen before, I can't see any images on Google of any, there are some images with quite large ones like the Air Research Maximiser kit

Anyone have any information about them, just curious.

I'd like to add another question; what is the story with the length of these prop shafts? Other R-2000 installations seem to have the typical prop hub/nose case distance.

The EC-47Q mounted the R-2000. The following all seem to have the extended prop shaft.

Spinners on the props only appeared on some of the earliest delivered DST. They were on Wright powered DST's of American and Eastern and P&W powered DST-A's of United. The only thing I can discern (pure speculation here) is that these early deliveries had counter weighted "controllable pitch" propellers and when "constant speed" propellers were installed, the spinners disappeared (though I do see pictures of ships with counter weighted "controllable pitch props without spinners.

Thanks Cubs2jets, they are the ones I was referring to, I was thinking it may of been like a marketing thing making them look faster than the competition but your idea is more likely.
