That’s Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton. The very same location where “Flying Leathernecks” was filmed and likely around the same time as this film was made.

That's exactly what you were watching! The Corsairs with the red prop hubs and 'WE' on the tail are in fact VMF-214 Black Sheep Corsairs. This was filmed about 4 years after Pappy was shot down in the Pacific though, so they are "post-war" Black Sheep birds.
