Do we know for sure that this helicopter has been disabled? Seems like they have a lot of these flying back and forth.

For what it's worth, General McKenzie just stated in a Pentagon press conference:
Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr. wrote:
On the ramp at [Hamid Karzai International Airport] are a total of 73 aircraft. Those aircraft will never fly again - when we left. They'll never be able to be operated by anyone. Most of them were non-mission capable to begin with, but certainly they'll never be able to be flown again.

So maybe another case of Syrian airfield decoys in 50 years? Maybe a possibility for the repeat of the export of Iraqi Sea Furies in the future? I do have to wonder how extensively they were sabotaged as well. (a la Iranian AIM-54s)

I thought the same thing. Why wouldn't they fly it out to Pakistan or Tajikstan, Turkmenistan? Those countries are still our allies. Isn't the helicopter still worth several million dollars?

Several articles have indicated the CH-46's were disabled as the crews walked away to catch a C-17 out of there. I think there has been some of the usual confusion between spotting CH-46's and CH-47's on the news, the two have been confused with each other for decades. I have seen clips with both 46's and 47's.

I think the time was numbered for the CH-46's, even with their rehab, they were getting tired, and like countless other vehicles, MRAP's and gear, simply abandoned. I do hope and imagine that the CH-47's were flown out. I do note many Afghani AF fixed and rotary wing aircraft did fly out to the North.

For what it's worth, a total of 46 former Afghan Air Force aircraft are reported have flown to Uzbekistan. This includes 24 helicopters and 22 fixed wing aircraft.[1] However, none of these were CH-46s.[2] I was trying to think of some historic parallels, and the case of the approximately 137 Iraqi aircraft that fled to Iran in 1991 was the best I could come up with.[3] The only somewhat similar circumstance I can think of off the top of my head is the 5 RH-53Ds Iran captured after Operation Eagle Claw.

Update the account was suspended, but the video showed four ch-46s in a hanger in Taliban hands.

I was thinking about this and, while it's improbable, it's not impossible. Among the many aircraft that fled to Thailand at the end of the Vietnam War were a bunch of A-1s. Four of these aircraft were later brought back to the United States. One of them actually did end up at NASM, A-1H, BuNo 135332. The others include A-1E, BuNo 132683 and A-1H, BuNo 139606.

There's also an A-1H, BuNo 134600, now at the National Museum of the United States Air Force being restored. That aircraft was reported to have Soviet instruments installed and likely remained in Vietnam until at least 1992. A-1E, BuNo 135247, which was seen along with 134600 at AMARG, ended up at Hill Air Force Base.

Here in New Zealand we have at least one Bird Dog flying that was brought out of Vietnam in the late 80s/early 90s, likewise an A-37.

I must say that I'm liking the paint scheme the Taliban are going with. Much more aesthetically pleasing than gray. So all the hubub about the US leaving military equipment to the Taliban. Exactly what [u]aircraft[u] did the US military leave behind? I think most of the aircraft left in Afghanistan was given to Afghanistan over the last 20 years?

Actually, I just reminded myself that there was one aircraft that was recovered as a result of the recent wars in the Middle East. The Italian Air Force Museum has an IMAM Ro.37bis that was recovered from Afghanistan in 2006 after it was spotted by a Italian soldiers serving there.[1][2][3]

There is a picture of a C-130 with the right inboard engine feathered and the left main gear is flat or damaged, and the left nose wheel is flat.

For whatever reason when I try to upload pictures I keep getting a size error message, no matter how many times I try to resize the pictures.

The problem might be that in addition to restrictions on dimensions (1024 x 1024 pixels) there's also an file size limit (2 MB).

Some additional information on the aircraft left at HKIA:
  • The aircraft are: twelve A-29s, twelve C-208s, two C-130s, one PC-12, twelve UH-60s, five CH-46s, fourteen MD-530s, and fourteen Mi-8s/Mi-17s.[1]
  • We now have a somewhat better description of how the aircraft were disabled:
Although the A-29s were arranged neatly in their hangar ... [t]heir avionics bays were open, and electronic boxes that operate vital systems, including the starter for the motors, had been ripped out, their components bashed to bits. A C-17 transport plane parked outside squatted on one wheel, and the Black Hawks had their windows smashed and trash strewn inside [their cabins]. Most ruined were the MD-530s. ... [T]hey were smooshed together in the hangar, as if a giant child had flicked them into one another. Their joysticks were cut at the handle.

EDIT (21-09-08): Corrected listed aircraft to remove C-130 mistakenly identified as C-17. Second reference removed as it only was necessary to support the C-17.

An update on reference #2 (https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/st ... fghanistan):

"For the record: 1:02 a.m. Sept. 6, 2021A previous version of this story misidentified a U.S. military transport plane left behind at the Kabul airport. The aircraft was a C-130, not a C-17."

I thought that a C-17 was left behind was a bit odd. Thanks for the correction.

That is not the point. The question was where "French" came from. It happened when the someone tried to post Fr og, which for some reason the software changes to French. If Phrog had been used it would not have happened, but then the humorous change would not have happened. I did not feel it necessary to correct it as I felt that was not needed to provide an answer. Apparently that was an oversight.
