Accident: Beech E18S, F-AZEJ, LFPM, 11 September 2021

Mon Sep 13, 2021 1:52 pm

Unfortunately, following the Lockheed Electra Junior at Moses Lake Municipal Airport there's been another accident involving a light twin. A Beech E18S, F-AZEJ, went off the end of the runway sideways after some sort of problem on takeoff during the Paris-Villaroche Air Legend airshow at Melun Villaroche Aerodrome on 11 September 2021. Luckily, there were no fatalities.

Just like last time, a good video of the incident has been posted to reddit: Had a scary moment this week-end

Two more YouTube videos and links to news articles (in French) are available on the Aviation Safety Network page for the incident: ASN Wikibase Occurrence # 267600

I'm surprised the gear didn't rip off when he went sideways.

No biggie. There are thousands of derelict Beech 18's worldwide for parts sourcing.

Slippery grass is more forgiving! I would guess that the left engine failed on takeoff.

I was there and witnessed the Beech swinging its tail from left to right, followed by a short jump in the air and ending in the grass at the end of the runway after a groundswing..

A rather worse European Beech 18 crash occurred on Corsica today involving the well-known G-BKGL, formerly operated by Graham Warner/ARCO - three crew reported as seriously injured. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery. The aircraft was destroyed by a post-crash fire.

The video looks very similar to the Bluebonnet Belle crash video.

Not sure why he was taking off with 10 degrees of flaps, but looks like the tail came up too soon and he started losing control, then tried to salvage it by forcing it into the air before it was ready.

He was in trouble before he actually got airborne. Pulling it up off the runway didn't help.
