Below 1st William O. Rottstedt inspects the damage to the North American AT-6D Texan training aircraft from Pittsburgh to Olean he was flying when he over shot the runway. As the plane appeared over the Olean airport at about 3:30 p.m. and attempted to land. The wet grass did not allow the plane to stop as it skidded off the grass strip, hit a hump at the edge of the field, and cartwheeled across East River Road and landed upside down with the tail hanging out over the Allegheny River.

Odd; 42-58117 is the same plane from the windstorm incident. Poor thing can't catch a break!
Nothing in Baugher about it, and AAIR doesn't show any accidents in December 1942 for it either.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. The comment was in response to the poster who asked what was the tubular device under the fuselage of the A-20.

Could be but since much of the aircraft was built from wood and fabric covered, probably not. Perhaps the fabric was removed for recovering.

Note the C-78 engines have canvas covers on them.
If it was burned out, why cover the engines?
Also, there is a good chance any fire would not have been limited to the fabric...lots of flammable wood, fuel, oil.....and there would have been greater damage.

My guess is either a training aid or maybe waiting for an opening at the fabric shop.

Lockheed F-5 Photo Recon Lightning made it home after a mid air collision with a RAF Halifax. Part of the Halifax's rudder is still embedded in the left wing.

That must have been quite the flight home!

Checked Baugher for more on that incident but couldn't find a date on it, or the fate of the Halifax crew. With their tail that badly smashed up I'm not too optimistic . Hope they had a chance to bail out...

This was in a P-38 book (forget which one), I remember reading it was a landing/taxing incident. My guess is the Halifax landed on top of a stationary P-38.
Flying home with drop tanks still attached, single engine (other engine not feathered), bent wing (aileron wouldn't function), Halifax vertical stab with rudder presumably being blown to one side or the other embedded in wing, lowering the gear and rolling out, seems a bit of a stretch.

1LT Karl Hallberg of the 389th FS/366th FG/9th AF was landing his Republic P-47D-20-RE Thunderbolt/42-76378 with hung 500 lb. bomb at Asch AF (Y-29) ie Belgium, March 1945. The bomb came loose and exploded, demolishing the Thunderbolt. Lt. Hallberg suffered head injuries, but made a full recovery.
