Wonder if they tried to recover in the same direction?

Not sure about this particular case, but the Essex class was built with forward arresting gear, and could recover aircraft while steaming backwards (and were quite fast in reverse). This was a procedure if the aft elevator was damaged/stuck in the down position.

Be a great idea to convert to 4k with colouring.

Clever, never thought of that.

I'm rereading IanToll's three volume history of the Pacific war.
Anyone interested in carrier types needs to read it (or similar histories) to learn about the unique nature of carrier ops.
An entirely different world than the usual land ops (yes, there is more to WWII than Mustangs, Tbolts, Luftwaffe and Spits).

If you ever wondered why early aircraft carriers had their numbers painted on both the bow and stern...

I'd say this Forum has covered plenty of Pacific carrier based aircraft. I know I've post plenty.
