Great picture for a caption?

She'll be right, new prop go over the engine, the rest of her will probably be fine, tough old P40.

Is there a story behind the picture, how, what, when and why?

I'm thinking he ran out of fuel or got lost and ran out of fuel.

One of the first warbirds? There isn't any military serial number on the plane, his clothes and watch look post war. Looks like he peed his pants as well, that would be enough to make any grown man upset.

Not a warbird; lack of an obvious s/n was common in the inter-war period. I think this photo must date from circa 1940/41?

Exhausts look a bit different, can't see anything similar - don't think it's an early attempt Merlin version though.

Also... that house in the background looks a bit European.

Warm?

Nice one Mark!

B or C fuse with an E nose?

As the article mentioned, a prototype of some sort?
