TBF planes of Munda 1943 - Bureau Numbers

Wed Nov 30, 2022 4:47 pm

Hello,

I am trying to research the disposition of TBF planes that my uncle flew in WWII during the Bougainville Campaign of 1943, flying out of Munda airfield. He flew both TBF-1 and TBF-1c planes. I can't find where these planes ended up at? - perhaps given to NZ and Australian forces? Any insight would be greatly appreciated: Bureau Numbers: 24244, 06472, 24265, 06223, 23981, 24334, 06455, 24181, 29906, 24182, 29906, 24406, 24265.

Thank you for your help!

You can also request a copy of the Aircraft History Cards from NASM with an e-mail here.

Thank you very much Mike for your reply.

I will certainly request the Aircraft History Cards - I was unaware this resource existed and greatly appreciate your info and response.

Of all the Bureau Numbers, the first one you search actually has a record, all of the others are lost / no info on the http://joebaugher.com/navy_serials/thirdseries1.html list .... such is research - always a challenge.

But now I know to request the Aircraft History Cards. Thank you and this forum for the information to continue this quest- Best Regard!

Actually, Baugher also includes (from your original list):

24334 (VC-40) from torokina lost off torokina in south Pacific May 11, 1944

Also, portions of Douglas E. Campbell's, BuNos! Disposition of WWII USN, USMC, and USCG Aircraft Listed by Bureau Number, can be found online (link below) which includes:

24406 (VMTB-233) lost off Rabaul in SOPAC on 30-Jan-44; Pilot: CAPT. P.E. LAMALE; Fate: M
