I'm looking for good photos from different angles of the Whiting Corp. engine stand pictured above. I looked on Google for a maintenance manual of this stand, but had no luck. I'd like to try to build something similar to work on model engines.

Jim, the pictures of the Whiting Stands in the WIX thread were taken with a digital camera. If you want high definition versions of those pictures, let me know. Again, I don’t know if they show the detail that you are looking for.

The Historic Flight Foundation in Spokane has an immaculate stand on display holding an equally immaculate R-2800, a spare from when it had an F7F and F8F.

It is a Whiting but perhaps a very slightly different model than the one pictured. My guess is it is larger or more heavy duty for larger engines.
Because it is so clean and painted a light gloss gray, you can see a lot of details like the chain that rotates the engine.

I volunteered at the San Diego Aerospace Museum back in the early 80's. I could have sworn that the were using the same engine stand & had a QEC engine mounted on the stand with the engine mounts attached to the stand. All the photos that are included in or linked to this thread have the engines mounted in the stand by the prop shaft.

Was it possible to bolt a plate to this stand that would enable the engine & engine mount to be attached to the stand?

Jim, I don’t believe that the Whiting Stands that I’ve seen will mount engines any way other than by the prop shaft. The engine can be mounted with the engine mount and accessories installed. Of course, in the case of the R3350 the oil tank must be empty due to rotating the engine in the mount. I’m not sure what possible advantage there might be to mounting the engine in reverse on the stand by the engine mount rather than the prop shaft.

Jim, is it possible that you were thinking of this type of engine stand? I forget what the name is for this stand. We just called them Q.E.C. (Quick Engine Change) stands.

I'd like to thank Larry Kraus and JohnB for helping me with the Whiting engine stand. They both went out of their way to send me beaucoup photos of the stand and John also sent me a sketch with dimensions of the stand.
