Where is C-47 "Hairless Joe" CBI WW II?

Fri Sep 26, 2014 10:35 am

My father served in the First Air Commandos, CBI under Col. Phil Cochran and Col. John Alison. His C47 aircraft "Hairless Joe" was piloted by Capt. Richard Cole (Dolittle's co-pilot on Tokyo raid).
I am trying to locate this aircraft. Can anyone help? I saw a post from several years ago which stated that the aircraft had been given over to British Military and was engaged in photo recon work.

You Tube: "Operation Thursday" if you would like more information on this unit.

Thank you!

Welcome to WIX!

A quick search turned up this WIX page: http://www.warbirdinformationexchange.o ... p?p=361500

Which led to this page: http://www.warbirdz.net/forum/showthread.php?t=675

Which says this:
I have found Hairless Joe for you. The plane was 42-23953 C-47A-35-DL msn 9815 delivered to the USAAF 5 Jul 43 and to 5th Air Force 15 Aug 43. No info of service in the SWPA can be found. On 28 Aug 44 it was operated by QANTAS on loan from Dept of Civil Aviation probably for charter work for USAAF.
20 Aug 45 with QANTAS registration VH-AEY
28 Aug 46 VH-AEY McMillan and Wentworth with Trans Australia Airlines (TAA)
23 Jan 61 Royal Netherlands Airforce, "X-19", PG-XAT

Hope it helps :-)
