MMG - Rate this movie... The Big Red One

Today's movie is The Big Red One. Please vote in the poll and reply to this threads with your thoughts about the movie. What you loved... or hated about it. Thanks.

Personal equipment was good--the tanks....well..... :roll:

I thought the development of the characters was excellent given the amount of time allowed to do that.

Always thought it was half-hearted to stage the Normandy Invasion with seven people--and one modern-ish boat belching smoke on the horizon.

I think the sub plot twist of the "last death" is very well incorporated into the docu-history of the story.

As squad-sized movies go I think it is in the lower end of the top five.

About average for a combat movie, it's no 'Battleground', but not bad for what amounts to an enlarged TV movie shot in Eastern-ish Europe using a plot and script that you could see light through, typical late 70's/early 80's war movie stuff like 'Bridge at Remagan' with all the stereotypical for the time conflicted characters .

Odd thing is it was Lee Marvins last film and was also about the last movie Marc Hammil starred in, Marc took his agents advise and went home and is still counting his money from the first three STAR WARS Westerns, I enjoy the first 3 SW films but they really were just hyped up cowboy movies full of black and white hats and the evil Colonel and his mob vs. the populace of Rock Ridge but bettter than the folowing 6. :lol:

Dang! I didn't mention the BEST squad movie of all time on purpose! That's fer sure....that's fer dang sure!

Actually Mark Hamill is quite busy doing tons of voice over work for animation. Bat Man, etc.

Voice overs are a one or two day deal in a nice studio, with A/C and lots of amenities, one of My favorite Cowboy actors Sam Elliott does lots of voice overs (Dodge RAM trucks, Beef Council) and I really like him as a cowboy actor, he's one of those actors that you just know smells like horses while acting, not colognes. Voice acting is a lot different and easier that learning pages and pages of script and emoting.

I doubt I've seen it all the way through since the early 80s. But like Inspector says, to me it always felt more like a Made-For-TV flick than a major theatrical production. Not bad, but not one of the greats either. Admitedly, I don't know a huge amount about infantry tactics or gear, so I can't comment on the accuracy in those regards.
