In the early 1940's, Hollywood made a movie about a theater in London that stayed open every night, even through the worst of the blitz-when the other theaters closed out of fear. Tonight and Every Night told the story of the Windmill Theater, but left some important facts out. In Mrs. Henderson Presents, we get the story of Mrs. Henderson. At thebworst of the depression, Mrs. Henderson's husband dies, leaving with a pile of money and nothing to do. So, she buys a theater with the idea of beating the other theaters by having live entertainment from 111am on, unlike the other theaters, which opened at 6 pm. At first, the idea works, then thebother theaters copy her. So, Mrs. Henderson comes up with the idea of having naked performers. This is stodgy old England and Mrs. Henderson needs permission from the Lord Chamberlain-an old friend of hers. He grants permission, as long as thebperformers remain still, as if in a painting. So, the first performance goes well, then the others, but WW2 breaks out and the theaters customers go from high society people to young soldiers. At onebpoint, the Lord Chamberlain tries to close down the theater, but Mrs. Henderson makes an impassioned speech about how importantbthe theater is for young soldiers. This is an excellent movie-five stars out of five.
