If it helps, I'll repeat what Bob and John (ForgottenField) have said. Materials, processes, and finishes changed throughout the war. Just because you have a blueprint that says X, doesn't mean that they didn't make micarta-X. Being stubborn instead of learning is detrimental to whatever your underlying purposes may be (research, restoration, pot-stirring, etc.)

Out of curiosity, may I see a timestamped photo of two of your NOS P-39 electrical panels? Just curious to see the differences

Just a rule of thumb, it is never wise to say "they didn't do that," "they never did that," "they didn't use that material for that," etc. During the war, they did all sorts of things, both intuitive and not.

Another rule of thumb, don't take things so personally and burn the hands that may feed your future warbird research/restoration. I may just be a naïve 25-year old, but I've found that the Golden Rule is very important in the warbird game.

There is the Warbird Information Exchange, and the Warbird ignorance Exchange. When I am drinking, as when they were giving out free Fox River Brewing Company Buzzin' Honey Ale at KOSH in 2007, I am a plank holder of the ignorance exchange. You should have heard the gasps when somebody asked me about P-51's....

The rest of the time, I am a student, and can learn something every day. Yesterday, I learned that RCA CRV Radios used by Lockheed for the Hudson contracts had "GFE for PV-2" stamped on some of the radios. I'd rather trade in information than ignorance....

Well said, John. We can all be critical at times. I always am, but I keep it to myself unless owners/restorers ask my opinion. Along those same lines, I always ask others to critique my warbirds. If they are correct, I can correct the mistake or it'll help me out when I do the next one. If they are incorrect, they will learn in the process. It's a give and take of information that makes the authentic restoration game so fun. Once you get uptight about it, the fun is gone (for you... not me. Doesn't bother me).

Fiftycal, I don't know if you are intentionally hiding behind the veil of anonymity, but if I can ever help you with your(?) restorations, please let me know. FYI, I picked up a named 1st Air Commando pilot's dress coat with original "L" Wings. Jim Gray helped me identify him, and he is in the records of the unit plus named on the CBI webpage. Before the war, he was a letter carrier from Pennsylvania (my native state)!
