I hope this doesn't get TOO buried in this G canopy thread...

We're looking to get some of the slider glass replaced in our "G" style (big single sheet) canopy. Banaire is not going to sell the safety glass anymore for the G model canopies. They will continue to carry the gasket and seal materials. Mostly Banaire doesn't want to sell anything they have to build a crate for in order to ship it.

EDIT: Found out that Lance still has safety glass for T6 sliders and is willing to sell/ship it.

But that's a reason to NOT want glass. I'm curious what the benefit to glass might be besides being harder to scratch.

I was just agreeing that Plexi is a benefit.
Other than being easier to clean, less prone to scratch and won't yellow if left outside I don't see a benefit.
Unless you are a Stock is Best type.
Plexi has been on our SNJ for 30+ years.

I had a nice glass windscreen I was going to use until I broke it trying to get it out of the frame... Doh!

I've heard of folks breaking a glass windscreen trying to mount it *into* the frame.... 8^)

I've got a nice / NOS / never-used glass windscreen, and I was planning on using that (and real /
safety glass for the 1/4 windows on the wind screen assy.), but then using plexi everywhere else.

See, this is why I brought this up. I need help. Obviously, like Sgt. Schultz, "I know NOTHING!"

The plexi that's in our back slider sides is pitiful. Two different kinds. Both scratch REALLY easy, and they are so dull, the work to clear them up is just out of the question.

Of course one of the safety glass slider windows in the front has a big deep scratch in it.

I always thought Plexi would be more likely to scratch and more likely to yellow (or just haze), and so I thought glass would be better. I don't really care as much about weight, or the sliding mass. But I'm certainly not opposed to someone educating me and changing my mind.

I was told by one T6 guy that he had 2 windows come broken and they broke a 3rd safety glass upon installation. Then he said something about someone putting .187 or .250 plexi in there?

No, I'm not a "STOCK" guy. Actually, I'm an "Experimental" guy by nature. So I'd like the BEST replacement window, not necessarily the "right window". I just thought safety glass would be the best choice.

All I know is at least 2 (preferably 3) of our side windows need to be changed out. Lance has the glass. And that's a bad choice? So you guys in the know, point me in the right direction. I'm not afraid to take the windows out and have some scratch resistant polycarbonate or something similar custom cut and insert them in there.

I just want the back seater to have reasonable protection and still be able to see outside.

Weight and durability are pretty much the factors here. Safety Glass is relatively heavy but doesn't scratch
as easily. I don't know if it's legal at Reno now or not, but I've seen some folks use a router on thicker plexi
panels and put "flush" plexi panels in the frames for less drag.

One piece of advice I can give is avoid using Lexan for aircraft glass. Lexan is *very* durable & hard
to break (in the event of an overturn/accident, you may not be able to hack your way through a Lexan
panel, but you can hack through a Plexi panel).

I just did my G model side glass

LP Aero will charge you an outrageous amount around 400.00 each.

Use Judy at aircraft windshield in Los Angeles

Around 95.00 each and the top around 140.00 for the one piece.

I did the 1/4 plexiglas with a 3/16 x 1/2 shim and packed it with black silicon

My plexiglas has been I there for 20 years, it won't yellow or craze for years

Plexiglas is lite and when installing won't crack

When I got my truckload of canopy sections it came with the forms for shaping 2 of the 3 top sections and landing light covers. I'm not going into the plexi shaping business but I would imagine that most glass/plastic supply shops could run them off fairly cheaply using these molds.

Maybe I should go see one of them?

Aircraft Windshield is not in Los Angeles BTW. They are in Los Alamitos.
