Check the elevator hinge points. Cracks can develope in the corners of the 'U' hinge points.

One way to check that is to thump the horizontal, near the tip, with your fist, listen to the sound, repeat, but this time hold the elevator with your other hand, if there is a difference in the sound, look at the hinges. We found a cracked one that way.
