Tail wheels

Mon Feb 22, 2016 9:53 pm

As a new member I'd like to compliment you all on the great forum and the very useful information that one can find in it. Thanks.

Speaking of information:

Our SNJ-5 has a P-51 tail wheel, the hub made by General Tire Co. p/n 3-292-1 (12 1/2 x 4 1/2). The two halves of the hub are secured with 6 bolts.

We have an extra wheel, made by Bendix, p/n 59462/1 (for the halves of the hub), 59465/4 (for the sub-assy of same). The size is the same as the one installed. The two halves of the hub are joined by 4 bolts.

Are the two interchangeable? If so - what are the ref for approvals?

Just for info, Lance Aircraft sell replacement wheels for P-51, made by machining a block of aluminum, in which the two halves are secured by 5 bolts. They have no certs for their wheels.

Thanks.

Jake

I think that Pioneer Aero makes the 5-bolt ones. Either that, or they use the same supplier as Lance.
