That was for the Bendix Transcontinental Race, since elapsed time was all that counted range was more important than raw speed. Any gas stop was lost time, any unplanned delay at a gas stop would cause a loss.

thats why Excalibur III was modified for a wet wing configuration and won the race :) (I have read it recently on a NASM book series about this aircraft restoration)

Can anyone shed any light on the history of the 4th photograph at the top..... race number 83 and tail number NX57799? Please.

I see it was operated by Queen City Flying Services..... but does anyone have dates and names of ownership please ?
