Does anyone have a photo of Howard's P-51B from the 354thFG, named DING HAO. Specifically, I want to find out if this ship had a Malcolm hood installed. His book, Roar of the Tiger, has artwork of the ship with the Malcolm hood, but other pics of Howard in the cockpit seem to show the framed canopy.

His early P-51B had the standard canopy. The well known P-51B had the malcolm hood. The picture of him standing up in the cockpit is a 353rd sqd. aircraft. The P-51B he won the MOH in was AJ*X.

My old Monogram kit of "Ding Ho" had a Malcolm hood.

Thank you, Martin. Another question: In the second photo, the one with the fellow standing beside the aircraft's engine, what are the little symbols above the exhaust stacks?

These are brooms - they stand for fighter sweeps - but the habit of painting on such mission markings soon was discontinued.

Cordially
