Did it fly with a french paint scheme? I had heard that it was a gate guard at Love Field here in Dallas, Texas many years ago. There is a picture of the Tumble Weed in the lobby at the sugar land airport...

The Chvatal white ex-CAF P-63E was N9004R, 43-11731.

The French colors P-63A-6 wore the white scheme also for a time in its CAF career. The CAF has been doing a long-term restoration of it. It is N191H, 42-68941, c/n 33-11.

I forgot to say, but the white Chvatal P-63 hulk was not TUMBLEWEED. According to their website with the the full history of 42-68941, N191H (formerly NX75488, the long-time ramp queen of Dallas Love Field) was the only one that had that name.

Amjet bought all 3 planes from Danny of which one was the CAF plane. All three were heat damaged in the barn fire Danny had. I did some trading and ended up with the best one which Sanders had been restoring for about a year and then sold it to Bruce Pruitt. Where is that plane today? Santa Rosa was where I last heard about it. The other two planes are the ones in AZ. both have pretty bad heat damage.

Hi;
My friend FAH 619 emailed me with this request. Maybe you can help guys:
"At least one fuselage at Falcon Field, (GossHawkAviation) was a former Honduran AF P-63E AA-43-11730. XFAH 402) This fuselage was brought bck to the US by Dan Chavatal c, 1977,
The other half burned fuselage was the fuselage left of P-63E 43-11731 CAF N9004R. If someone has access to the wings and these fuselages plz let us know. We are trying to ID the P-63-E wings lying on the ground also."

Thank you,

It seems like the population of flyable P-63's has remained about the same for about 50 years. A few racers and the CAF's. The one restored by Frank Boorman only replaces the one the idiot crashed in England doing a vertical roll. I remember seeing it at Oshkosh painted orange when Sandberg had it; very nice.
What ever happened to the one formerly owned by the Whittingtons? The CAF has always had the same number, one flyer and a couple of projects. Does this seem accurate?

The one that crashed at Biggin Hill was not the old "Tipsy Miss". TFC has had two of them over the years.

I'm interested to hear about this fire, as it is news to me. Who is/was Danny Quaffle too... that's not a name I've heard in warbird circles before. When you say "heat damaged" do you mean badly deformed, or just heated to the point where they could be salvaged by anealing and then re-heat treating?

All the best,
Richard

You guys are going to kill me for posting this. How many P-63's does the CAF still have at this point? I know there is a project at Breckinridge and there used to be another is St.Louis, maybe another in Atlanta. How many do they have?
WHy don't they sale the Breckinridge P-63 and others and get a project that has a lot more commonality with their fleet like another Wildcat or P-40 project?
A good trade would be to trade the P-63 stuff to the Fighter Factory since they have so many other russian combat types and take a P-40 project , Corsair, or find a wildcat project.
My bet is that when the CAF had two airworthy wildcats and two P-63's, (a long time ago) the Wildcats generated a lot more airshow revenue. YOu could even put a back seat in a Wildcat. Like the A model mustangs, the P-63 is neat but is best operated by a certain type of owner.

Following with the previous post, here goes an explanation via FAH 619:

1.Mr. Dan Chavatal had at one time 4 P-63s fuselages under storage in his barn in Jordan , MN. 43-11730, 43-11731, 43-11735, 43-117XX, 43-117XX.

2. One of the fuselages was an X Honduran AF P-63E 43-11731 X CAF N9004R that had a fire in flight at Rebel Field c. 1963. The pilot was Dick Disney.

3. Mr. Chavatal sold his P-63 collection to Mr. Wally Fisk prior to his barn fire c. 2001. The fuselages under storage by Wally Fisk show no further evidence of fire damage in c. 2002. Some of this P-63 were seen inside his C-123 at Oshkosh c. 2001.
