After looking at Mark Allen's post on the USS Sable & USS Wolverine, I was wondering if any SNJs are still around with the tail hook. I assume this was not a North American addition, but installed later, is this correct?

Bill Crowne (sp) built a beautiful SNJ-5C a number of years ago and it was a bone stock beautiful bird. He even brought it to OSH and even had two live 30 ANM2's firing full auto with wood tipped blanks. He had received permission to bring them in through the BATF and the local police. He would fire the cowl and wing gun every so often until one of the warbird Directors had a fit and shut him down. It was awesome!

I remember Bill showing me how the whole tail hook mod was done at Pensacola and you could see the uneven cut out for the hook complete with original serrations from the tin snips. It also had the locally welded up hook truss and other gear just as it was done PNCLA. Authenticity was very important to him. My kind of guy.

I saw the -5C at Sun and Fun years ago and learned that Bill had sold it to a new proud owner.

It had Badoeng Straight on the tail. Shouldn't be too hard to track down.

Found one on Airliners.net:
