CAF P-51 Tuskegee Airman landing accident

The pilot of a World War II-era P-51C Mustang is OK after making an emergency belly landing at Dallas Executive Airport Wednesday morning.

Dallas-Fire Rescue confirms the plane landed at about 10:30 a.m. with its gears retracted. The fighter plane's prop detached as it left the runway and came to rest in a grassy area off a taxiway.

Whelp, here we go again. Glad to hear the pilot wasn't hurt and the plane isn't damaged any worse.

Looking on the bright side of things, it's not way out somewhere else to recover and it's in a good market to try and raise funds for rebuilding it faster and no one is seriously injured. Score another example of a helmet being a good thing, too.

It was in far worse shape after the accident in Red Wing. We rebuilt it in just a little more than 5 years last time. It will be back in the air much faster this time, providided they raise the $$$ needed...

Question: How does warbird insurance work? Would the repairs to the aircraft be covered after some sizable deductible?

Depends on if they have just liability or hull coverage. They also would be able to somewhat set the deductible based on what premium they want to pay.

looks like it will need a new engine, prop, engine mounts, firewall, all frames around cockpit, stringers, skin, flaps, air intake, cowlings, bottom wing skins and maybe ribs...guess it wont be an auhentic mustang anymore :drink3:

I had the privilege to meet with Don Hinz and several of the Tuskegee Airmen while the plane was under its first restoration. It will be restored and tell it's story.

This looks to be a 2/3 or 3/4 scale Mustang.

Its just too small compared to the people in the photos.

What say you ?

Nope full sized, it has the tramp stamp, no one would want to put that on a replica. I bet the CAF is happy about all the free advertising right now..
