Could you please post photos of the Ford Built data plate and its known locations.
I'm assuming there were several included in the aircraft (in the major assemblies) and I was told one was removed from the bomb bay area. When I visited, It had not been reinstalled and could not be located.
I want to know where to look for them when I go to B-24 crash sites. Any info about how many there are and locations would be helpful.
Thanks
AlohaDave (the guy who did the Aviation Archaeology presentation in your museum)

I wonder why the serial numbers were restamped on Items #27 and #28, or least what they appear to be.

Removing the heavy oxidation, for future paint or leave as is. The bottom panel stringers and reused upper PB4Y-2 longerons are now reinstalled to Station 6.0, surprisingly they work really well for the lower longerons.

Item 72 = Nose Assembly

Very nice, keep after it crew, she is looking great. I hope you can somehow locate a wing section.

When complete she may not be exactly a Ford built, but certainly can be called a Willow Run built.

April Project Update

The project crews have completed the remaining structure aft of the rear bomb bay bulkhead at Stations 6.1 and 6.2. The remaining items are the fine details of the Station 6.0 lower bulkhead. The forward flanges may require rework to accommodate the bay door tracks under fabrication. Reinforcement channels for the lower bulkhead will be installed as finishing touches after the tracks are installed. The side panels from Station 6.0 to 5.1 will be restored from Waterline-45 to the Bombay door fairings. Soon, new Longeron sections and stringers will be fabricated and quickly installed in the coming weeks.

In the last two weeks, the external fire extinguisher compartment was repainted with the correct exterior colors after cleanup.

The museum's official plan is only the tail section for the near future, but things can change. I have a few ideas, but I need to focus my efforts with the tail section till we are complete.

No airfoil contour data is known to exist to correctly recreate the Davis airfoil shape. So far, the microfilm line tracing of the wing bulkheads is yielding a 3/16" worst case tolerance, with 1/32” - 1/16" average of the airfoil contour. The work so far is not factoring in the skin thickness, just the inside skin surface only. The contour tracing will be redone to create the spline points at a percentage of wing chord at each station. This will help to find where the contour is floating with the drawings. Near maximum wing thickness the assembly drawings were drawn at half-scale, and were full-scale at Station #2 to the wing tip.

So does that mean you'll be building an entire tail assembly from scratch?

No. I wish we could, but we just do not have the volume of space required for building, assembly, and installing the tail fins and horizontal elevator. The current project efforts are just to finish the fine details of the fuselage section. :)

Hopefully the space issue will be resolved when the museum moves over to the west side in the next few years.

Y'all have done a fantastic job on the old girl since I delivered the fuselage sections from Az., and Md.
Keep up the great work.... I always wondered what kind of creepy crawlers you pulled from the tail section....I had a few jump out, even after we unloaded the trailer....never saw any gila monsters, but you never know,
G.
