Ignoring the awful fuselage modifications and the spinners, are the cowlings on that aircraft stock? They look longer than normal, but it doesn't make sense to me that a longer cowling would be of benefit.

Purely a guess, but maybe the powerplant was moved forward to compensate for what the pressurized cabin etc. did to the CG?

That was one of the last working Invaders, it was used by Garrett for testing of turboprop engines, which were mounted on the nose. When it was retired it was donated to South Mountain High school, which was starting up a aviation program. I saw it fly over my house many times, it was kind of normal for me to see a 3 engine Invader.

Wow - totally off topic, but boy do I remember Tripod.com It was like learning the Internet, posting webpages in 1997 or 1998 or so....

Cool post; yes it's interesting those "postwar" modifications done to so many warbirds. But that kept so many around for a few more years than the rest of 'em!

OK....let's make a deal.....we remove the ugly nose and make this 75mm Canon prototype replica instead?

Quote:
DOUGLAS XA-26B
Three seat ground attack prototype with an unglazed nose housing a 75-mm cannon.

Bet U the cockpit area / co-pilot seat must be fun places to be when firing. At least it seems to me the B25 slugged the cannon ''below'' the floor desk!!!!!

The Marksman had a deeper walk-thru pressurized cabin and the new windscreen was part of the mod...not pretty but effective.
