Hope he gets that 30K subs soon!
Why? I mean really, I'm an old guy and don't understand all this stuff. What difference will it make to get the desired number of subscribers, and for that matter, where does that number come from in the first place? And for Youtube vids in general, why do the thumbs-up and thumbs-down matter? These are real and genuine questions asked in good faith, thank you. (I'd ask these questions in a more appropriate place, if I had any idea where that place might be, which I don't.)
As Tim suggested, 30K opens new options for "creators" on the platform, allowing for more control over monetization of the videos. Like/dislike ratio, subscriptions, and average viewing minutes per video are what unfortunately now drive the YouTube "Algorithm" which determines how much a given video makes. The larger percentage of your viewers that are subscribers gets you a higher share of the ad revenue on the video, and more average minutes of watch time per video (i.e. if everyone watches 90% of the minutes of a video, you get more than if they watch 50% of a video) and having a good like/dislike ratio ensures you get monetized. It's really complicated and it's a point of contention with those who make YouTube a full-time job, but even if you aren't, having good stats and having decent subscriber numbers helps with projects like this which only benefit from the income and means that he'll have to do less fundraising via other methods (Patreon, GoFundMe, etc) because the Ad Revenue will cover the costs he's trying to cover with it.
If people aren't aware, he's trying to get the Ad Revenue to pay for the Food & Lodging for everyone who will be involved in the restoration in Quebec (about 6 people I believe) and then airfare and shipping for the people and parts from Red Deer to Quebec. Any extra will go toward things like paint, extra people, and fuel.
