I won't believe it was a loop until I see an entire video. Usually when someone screws up they recognize it coming out of the top of the loop and chop the power, in some cases drop the flaps and get the nose up to a maximum L/D nose high angle. In this case the airspeed indicator indicates he hit the ground going 340 knots (391 mph.) To me, that suggests a full throttle, screaming dive at the ground . Then we he went to pull up the momentum continued the downward path. Had it happen to myself, but wasn't flying nearly as aggressively. I think you guys are giving too much credit to say he knew how to do low level aerobatics.
Honestly, the people in the stands were probably terrified.

Why don't you try trusting other people a bit? It may not have been a loop, but it sure looked close to one. One of the videos has disappeared, but if you need to figure it out, here's a broken link to it. Take the spaces out to copy and paste... www.you tube.com/watch?v=Gnv8M 2eIQ-I
I think a couple of the videos may have been of other passes, but it appears it was either a botched Cuban 8 or a loop to me.

It is hard to believe that a pilot was allowed to fly a display like that in any country. He was inches from mowing down a grandstand full of people and children.

You guys are right. In the early clip, his flying was so sloppy , it just looked like some impulsive person getting in way over his head. Apparently he had previously had an accident in 2015 and 2017. Not going to speculate on what kind of pilot he was. Lucky he didn't kill some people on the ground.

FWIW, the location given of Escuintla is 47 railroad miles from the capitol at Guatemala City and near
the base of the one the 3 volcanoes in the area. It has sure grown up and developed since I visited
there several times in the 70's.

Clearly just a matter of time looking at that: ditto the JP pilot.

I don't like speaking ill of the dead, but he seemed like he was "An accident waiting to happen". It's a sad day when anyone dies or a plane goes down, just glad it wasn't much worse, with as close as he got to spectators during previous demonstrations.

Do they have different rules regulating air shows there?

Seems to be more of a Limbo Rock competition than an aerobatic display :(

Several thoughts:

:partyman: Railroad does not work any longer (Tom Mungovan) and yes, the area has changed a lot through the years.

:partyman: For the life of me, when I posted last, I could not remember the "Cuban Eight" maneuver name. But that is what looks like was attempted.

:partyman: Yes, there are rules for aerial displays, separation of airplanes from crowds, and so on and so forth. ENFORCEMENT is the issue. it depends on who you are.

Not different from the college admissions scandal. If I happen to do it, I am sure to go to jail. Other more equal animals, get simply admonished not to do it again.

Apropos of nothing: Whenever I meet with some people, and a friend lands, everyone -excluding yours truly, because I don't fly any longer- criticizes their landing or their flying abilities. If the person who landed happens to join the group, then becomes part of the crowd that criticizes whomsoever happens to be flying / landing next.

Saludos,

Tulio

That 2015 vid

Those are standard combat runs/strafes

Different area
Different rules in peacetime as well

You guys woulda all had major sh#t attacks at the air shows I attended as a kid
Here in good ol’ California

And to us
Thats what real airshows were

Now adays
Its all so watered down
We just reminisce

And I never saw an airframe or a life lost in ALL of the airshows my dad took me to

Now the recent video

He straight mushed that thing out
You just can’t stop energy at that rate

And when the pilot realized that
It was just too late
