1/48 US NAVY SNJ-6

Tue Aug 09, 2011 2:44 pm

This is my 1/48 Revell SNJ-6, in the markings of NAS Grosse Ile Michigan. The decals are aftermarket from Becher Bits. The decals also include a resin rudder to convert the kit to an SNJ-2.
The reason I chose these markings is NAS Grosse Ile is only 2 or 3 miles from my home, and the current home of the Yankee Air Museuim, and a definate source of local pride. During the war years, Grosse Ile was a major training center for both American naval aviators, as well as over 1000 RAF pilots (Grosse Ile sits right on the Canadian border, at the Detroit River.)

The kit itself is ok, a pretty detailed cockpit, but soft Revell plastic. I rescribed all of the raised panel lines, and shaved off most of the raised rivet details. The canopy isn't quite accurate fro an SNJ-6, but that's a detail I can overlook for sitting on my shelf at home
The Belcher Bits decals go on very well, and I may have to buy another kit to build as an SNJ-2. This was fun and pretty straight forward kit to build, and perfect to celebrate the Naval Aviation Centenial.

Nice work! Love the orange band over the yahoo yellow.
Was that a REVELL re release of the MONOGRAM kit from years gone past? If so, that would explain the heavy rivet detail.

thanks!
Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is a re-release. You ever see the T-28? yikes!

Back in the dark ages, when we all did modelling by oil lamps, but post DUCO cement, I built a couple AIR FORCE T-28's and a couple NAVY T-28's by MONOGRAM, somewhere in my pile of unbuilts I've got one of those horrible yellow-ish NAVY kits that I picked up years ago when the kit was reissued, so I got the vacuform aftermarket canopy too.
They were pretty cool when first issued in about 1958 because they were a descernable scale (not REVELL 'box scale') they went together easily and looked OK when finished, and they had some 'working' features.
An easy conversion is turning a 1/72 HELLER FENEC into a late USAF T-28.
Again, you did a really nice job!

I've had one of those on the desk for a while but it keeps getting pushed aside for other priorities. A pretty fun build though.

Yours looks stunning!
