Very confusing.

So the 737-MAX is the next generation of 737, and the 737 Next Generation is in fact the last generation.

The 'Classic' 737 is the -100 through -600, 100/200 using JT8D(the Football), 300 -600 using CFM 56 engines. The 'next generation' is -700 through -900 (which can seat more people than a 707-320 Intercontinental ) The 700 through 900 use a scaled down 767 wing design, if you look out the cabin window it ain't the 37 wing you're used to.
APS, Aviation Partners System winglets can be fitted to now, any model 737 since there is a winglet mod to fit early series wings, and pretty much every 37 rolling out of Renton has the winglets installed. (APS embarrassed the self anointed gods of the wing @ Boeing by getting to use the -800 prototype to prove the theories of their design even though Boeing POO-POOed them and said they'd never get near what the hoped for, the numbers were significantly better than expected and Boeing Wing Group sat down to a cold crow sandwich and chips ).
So.now we are @ series 3 of the 37 with the MAX version with bigger engine fans and redesigned pylons and nacelles and only 1 other commercial airframe has outsold the 737, the DC-3, and that took a World WAR, not bad for an airplane Boeing figured wouldn't sell more than 250-275 total back in 1967.

APS also makes the winglets fitted to 757's and is starting on 737 style winglets for AIRBUS to replace the curb feeler tips currently fitted.

Minor correction, the 737 Classic is the 737-200 thru the 737-500 (the 737-100 is now just called "737's" or "Original 737's"), the 737NG is the 737-600 thru 737-900ER (remember, the -900 and -900ER are two different models). Also, I've heard the statement that the 737NG wing is a scaled down 767 wing, but there are too many differences between the two. It look more like a "grown up" 737 wing, which is how Boeing describes it in their development history of the aircraft and it's described in several books.

To make things even more confusing, Boeing has actually changed family nomenclatures before this. When the NG's were originally rolled out, the 737-300 thru -500 was called the "New Generation" 737 with the -100 and -200 being the "Classic". However someone within Boeing decided you couldn't have 2 737"NG" series, so the tossed the original CFM models in with the JT8D models.

So I'll take it that the short answer to my question is 'Yes'

Oh, one more thing - they're not. They're involved in litigation now because Airbus stole the design for their "Sharklet" tips and then tried to toss APS aside and file an invalidation claim against their patent that's been on file since 1994 (or was it '96?) after 7 years of trying to get a partnership going. If you didn't already hate EADS and their absolute vacancy of ethics, here's another reason. APS has put a copy of all the information up on their website for you to review for yourself.
