I usually don't do this, but at the moment, I'm unable to find my data on this machine. I photographed it at the Reno Air Races, this past September. Anyone got the tail number handy?

Roger, I have it listed as N1XP. It used to be painted in North Dakota ANG colors with the s/n 0-93800. I believe the c/n is 4733. Hope this helps. Steve

This DC-3 is Ex-Transport Canada (TC) CF-DOT. In its last years in government service is was operated by TC for the Canadian Coast Guard in a pollution patrol role and was based out of Vancouver International airport. I also have this info I had found on the internet. 38630 (c/n 4733) to USAAF Sep 20, 1942 - 5th AF, Australia Oct 26, 1942, operated as ‘VHCDR’, later ‘VHCFV Duchess’ - Pacific Wing ATC Sep 22, 1944 - USA Aug 11, 1945 - To RFC Apr 24, 1946. To civil registry as NC843 (Wien Air Alaska Dec 1946), N843K (Rr), CF-DOT (Canadian Dept of Transport ‘960’ feb 28, 1950), C-FDOT (Rr 1975). Last N1XP with Odegaard Aviation Inc, North Kindred, ND. May 14, 1998 to 2006 The Duggy website says it was restored to original ANG colours, the colours look suspiciously similar to Transport Canada scheme. Photos of this aircraft with the Coast Guard can be found at http://www.pacific.ccg-gcc.gc.ca/photos ... age1_e.htm This photo from the website is CF-DOT being picked up by its new owner after being surplused by Transport Canada.

Thanks all for the replies. I got a bit on the lazy side, and didn't do my usual research on it. I've attached a picture of it at the Reno Air Races in 2000. I also saw it painted in these ND Air Guard colors at Oshkosh during my last visit there in 1998.

Some very nice shots there Roger. I do like the Widgeon, it must have only been there for part of the week, as I was there on the Fri and Sat and can't remember seeing it. Just one thing though, that 'authentic' FAA scheme is about as authentic as painting a P-40 gloss pink and calling it a desert scheme, I'm afraid. |

As I recall, William T. Larkins took a picture of one just like that back in the 1940's. He thought the scheme may have come from a picture he took. Of course his photo's were in black and white, so maybe the green is off a bit? I can correct this text if your sure about it? PS. The Widgeon was just there on Sunday |

Okay Mike, You sent me digging deeper into the vault. I also contacted WTL and he posed with one back durng WWII or thereabouts (see picture below). WTL referred me to another book "Surplus WWII U.S. Aircraft" that shows a picture of an RN J4F-2 in this scheme (FP456) on page 28. Also if you have the Grumman Guide book (1976), page 49 shows a full frame camoflauged pictured (FP-458) along with the info of 15 lend-leased Widgeons to the Royal Navy, FP455-FP469. If your talking about the plane having a glossy finish, that's kind of an obvious given.

The camouflage colours (should be Dark Slate Grey and Extra Dark Sea Grey with Sky Type 'S' undersurfaces.) , roundel styles and fin flash are all incorrect for WWII-era fleet air arm. The picture that you posted clearly shows the correct roundel style for the period. Not to mention the incorrect gloss finish that you've already mentioned. A bit like painting a P-47 in glossy Vietnam-era camouflage with post-war stars-and-bars with a red stripe in, then adding 56th FG codes and calling it an authentic representation of a wartime camoufaged 56th FG machine. |
