Qantas Airlines has canceled an order with Boeing for 35 878-9's due to a huge financial loss of approximately $A 245 Million, it's biggest loss since going private several years ago. Their order for 35 additional 787-8's still stands.

According to Aviation Week, they're still keeping their options....and will probably re-order them.
The net result is to delay delivery until their bottom line improves.

Because of delays in the program, they could cancel their orders without penalty...so no harm, no foul.
And some lucky airline (without the econ troubles Qantas has) will get their 787s earlier.

And I read in this mornings birdcage liner that the 787 surge line in Everett started up on the 24th and may become permanent for the -9 line. It's a traditional 'chicken foot' line not the straight through that the 47/77 and original 87 lines are
