A day of big events-

Mon Oct 04, 2010 5:27 pm

In this date in 1957 the Russians put Sputnik into orbit, I remember standing in the backyard as a nine year old watching it go over-
On this date in 1958 BOAC started trans Atlantic jet passenger service from London to Idlewild using DH COMETS-
and, as a side note, in 1970 Janis Joplin was found dead, a week after Jimi Hendrix was buried.
Feel old yet?

When I was a little guy my dad would take me along to feed the cows in the evening. During the winter it was dark when he was pitching alfalfa off of the haystacks and I'd lay in the hay looking up at the sky. He'd always point out moving lights up there (I have no idea if they were airplanes or satellites 'cause I was five or so) and tell me they were "Sputniks". This was 1961/62 but dad just called all satellites Sputnik. I'll never forget watching those lights--it's another reason I've always been drawn to aviation and the space programs.
