Nice insight into how Boeings internal culture has morphed over the last decade and a half from 'us and them' throwing literal hands full of nuts and bolts at each other across the assembly floor.
Unfortunately, Mr. Thompson fails to mention the guy who laid the roadbed for Mr. McNerneys success, one Alan Mulally who is responsible for quelling the open warfare between the 'we know how to get it done' traditional Seattle area attitude and the 'interlopers' from California who very nearly succeeded in turning Boeing into the next MDC and making the next smoking hole in aviation, do those of you who work @ Boeing wonder why you have to sign an annual 'morality pledge"? Just ask old Harry Stonecipher who was caught pinching a bit more than his secretaries fanny after stating he was 100% behind being an upstanding, honorable guy. Mr. Mulally is now praised for making even more major attitude adjustments at a company with an even more poisonous atmosphere, FORD Motor Co. after leaving Boeing.
Mulally stopped the drive started by the ex MDC managers, who were taking top positions in the company after MDC came out on top in the merger and had Phil Condit completely buffaloed (Condit was a fair engineer, but wasn't liked within TBC and couldn't herd ducks with a hockey stick), to run off anyone who knew anything and could work around a serious issue with no more effort than figuring out what they wanted on their burger and replace them with lower pay grade 'stand arounds' who couldn't and wouldn't take any initiative for fear of being chastised or worse, by their managers. Far too many centuries of knowledge and experience were given the 'golden handshake' and hustled out the door and into early retirement to cut down the hourly payroll and save money.

Some things never change in aerospace! I think all the airframers have gone through this at one time or another.
