I'm a 12 year student pilot looking at going to a crop dusting school. I work in aviation. So, I have no money. Salle Mae won't give me enough, even with a co-signer. Any ideas? Curtis Block |

at 12 you should be small enough to fit into the air duct of most large banks. Problem solved. |

Find a job outside of aviation to fund you... I work in a warehouse, and am debt free so far. Ryan |

Unfortunately aviation is a disease, not a job. I'm a sick man. 60-70 hrs. a week on the airport. I've tried the alternative and it's not for me. Currently my boss is trying to make me an A&P. The problem is, I want to spend more time breaking airplanes than fixing them. Curtis Block P.S. On your L-2M what are those funny little things sticking up from the wings? Is something falling off? The L-2A Lve got most of my time in didn't have those. ![]() |

Cut down your airport time and get a second and/or third job. I worked three jobs to put myself through flight school. I worked for a communication company as a tower jock/steeple jack for most of the time. When we were not out on a job, I split my time between two aircraft shops, getting flight time at one and a few bucks an hour at the other. I ate beans and rice and macaroni and cheese and rarely went out to eat. Got my PPL and didn't have to take a loan out to do it. Had friends that went all the way to commercial/inst./multi and were into debt up to their ears. One guy got a right seat job with a commuter and ended up having to have a roomie in a really cheap apartment and take every trip he could just to have any bucks after the bills and loan payments. Like Dave Ramsey says, deliver pizzas, parttime for Home Depot or WallyWorld or the like and you will get it done. Going onto debt to get your tickets these days is financial suicide unless you make good money already. Private loans are about all you are going to be able to find for flight school, and the interest rates are killers....10% or higher on average. By being debt free when you finish getting your tickets, you are in a heck of a lot better position when it comes to job hunting, in that you then don't have to struggle as hard to pay the bills. Food for thought.....and good luck. |

What CVair said is basically what I think... I'm in a flight school right now trying to finish up an IF rating and hopefully moving on to the commercial within a month - debt free. You worry a lot less, and my hope is that I can be a bit more picky and choosy if I ever decide to get a flying job. Since I'm not in debt, I don't need to jump for the first lousy opportunity that pokes it's nose into my world. Ryan |
