Hi,
I am looking for a picture of Clay Lacy's P51 at the 1964 Reno races to build a model of it.
Thanks.

The color is actually a lot more plum purple-ish, an odd color to capture but it was a lot more 'WHOA!!' than what's shown in the photos. Somewhere between F.S. 17100 and 17142. Chrysler had a color on NEONS that was fairly close.

Neat pictures, Clay Lacy, Mira Slovak and Wayne Adams, yet there is Frank Tallman in the Curtis Gulfhawk!
Interestingly, I got to talk with Russ Schleeh last year at the Planes of Fame show about his connection to the Maytag Mustang. A nice impromptu meeting.

Hey Chris, how was Russ? It's probably been three or four years since I've talked to him (for me he was much more famous for his boat racing antics than the...what, one race he flew in the Maytag Mustang? Los Angeles 66, I think)? He's been suffering from Alzheimers for several years now and the last time we spoke there was a lot of stuff he couldn't remember. Really hard to see someone who is still of healthy body but the mind is just going away.
Ben Hall is the same way. Still strong and kicking, but....

...I looked up the colors you mentioned + rechecked the original slides...
...then photoshopped the color...here's try #2...

...thanks for the input on this...I want to get the color as accurate as possible...
...was the exact same color used each time the airplane was repainted ??
...I see four different shades in the mustangsmustangs pics ...
... (none from 1964) ...the OP asked for the 1964 scheme

You will in any collection of photos, particularly non-digital ones. The combination of different cameras, settings, films, ambient light and scanners means the best you can get is an
impression of the color. For absolute accuracy you'd need the Pantone (PMS) number or whatever the paint manufacturer's equivalent chip was.
I think the four 'shades' are in fact just one allowing for the above.

WallyB has it about right with his MUSTANGS MUSTANGS leading shot post of the airplane, it's a weird color and all the variables he mentions do come into play, far as I remember, it was always the same shade of ....I guess you'd call it 'plum'. Just look @ the variations of the six shots accompanying the main photo, it varies from very red to pretty close to what your original shots showed. You might try contacting Clay Lacy Aviation in either Van Nuys or Seattle to see if they might have the paint codes.

What a colour! Suddenly a P-51 covered in jelly beans doesn't look so bad...

Does Clay Lacey still fly this airplane? I have heard it just sits in the hanger but I do not know if that is true.

...right on...
..Lacey says the color is "ORCHID" and the airplane has been repainted twice with that same color (as of 2003)...
http://www.airportjournals.com/Display. ... ID=0309001 The numbers for "ORCHID"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchid_%28color%29 hex DA70D6
RGB 218-112-214
HSV 302°49% 85%
Entering these into Photoshops color picker and using that as a reference, WallyB's leading shot...
...as well as "photoshop # 3" above appear extremely close.
