Post subject:  Recommendations for a new warbird fanatic?
I think I saw a thread somewhere about book recommendations on warbirds, and now I can't seem to come across it.

As I am reading around on this website, I keep coming up with all sorts of questions and just want to learn more and more about these incredible airplanes. Are there any books that you guys would recommend for someone just sort of starting to learn about warbirds?

I have some basic knowledge, but would really like to learn a lot more!

Any good book suggestions you guys have would be amazing!

Hunting Warbirds By Carl Hoffman is quite an interesting book. It will definitely give you some insight(both good and bad) into this desease Warbird Chasing, that all of us Wixers seem to be afflicted with!

The disease! ha ha, too funny. Thank you for the tip, I appreciate it! I will check it out. Having some insight from both the good and the bad is a good thing... a little perspective never hurt anyone.

I don't know about you, but, I cannot drive by an airport with out just taking a quick look around, just in case! :roll: Of course, I just happen to have to cross the airport(Bangor Maine) on my way to AND from work(Okay it adds 10min to my drive......) and living a mile and a half from the airport, I tend to do a lot of running out of the house for anything that doesn't sound like a commuter jet or a KC-135(MeANG). :shock: And it has paid off. My Best Catch Ever was The Fighter Factory's PBY coming back from an extended tour of Europe. I got some excellent shots inside and out. 8) Yes Stephanie, My name is Don Martin and I am a Warbirdaholic. Wait, I'll be right back I hear a JET!

Don, trust me, I know exactly what you're saying... I hear something when I am outside and my eyes dart towards the sky... the group of friends I am with - they just leave me standing there. The nice thing is my desk has a great view of final approach for KPDX, so I get to see most of the planes coming in throughout the day. It's a perk.

Try two of Martin Caiden books;
"Rag-Wings and Heavy Iron" & "The Saga of Iron Annie".

Both have been mentioned before on the WIX, but they are entertaining.
"Rag-Wings" is a look at Martin's general "warbird" antics, and "Iron Annie" is the story of his purchase and restoration of an original Junkers JU-52.
Good stuff and lots of fun!

I second the recommendation on Marty Caidin's books above, and also "Everything but the Flak"; about ferrying B-17's over to England for the movie "The War Lover".

Advice when reading Marty's stuff: Take with three or more grains of salt. As a buddy of mine says, "Ol Marty would tell it like it was, even when it wasn't!"

Also the "Blue Book", History of the CAF Ghost Squadron. Big thick book with embossed blue cover, usually pops up on ebay or abebooks.com About 200 pages, don't bother with the smaller 60 pager.

If you'll PM me with your mailing address, I'll send you some good books. I've got a bunch of stuff I'd been giving to the local EAA chapter, a little at a time, but they are just leaving them in boxes. I'd rather you have them since you have the interest.
