Nice photos, thanks for posting them. CF-BBQ (love that registration) is still around as NC330TC (N330TC). Are any other of the Waco's pictured here still surviving?

A few of them are:

Photo #3 is Bettie Lund with Waco ATO NC719E. Resides about 50 feet from my Waco.

Photo #9 is Roger Don Rae with Waco JYM NC731K that is being restored by George Gumbert in KY

Photo # 10 is Art Davis' Waco CTO NC666N that is being restored in KS

Photo #13 is a Waco YMF-5 NC14080 that also was a resident of my airport until about 2 years ago. Now being restored in WA.

Nostalgic flight home for historic bush plane

This Waco ZKS-6, built in 1936, operated as a bush plane in northern Saskatchewan and recently made a return visit home, flown by its current American owner. (David Shield/CBC) A 70-year-old old bush plane, a mode of transport that was once the only means of moving supplies and people around northern Saskatchewan, has returned to the U.S. after coming "home" for a visit.

The Waco ZKS-6, built in 1936 and registered for a time as CF-BBQ, serviced northern communities through most of the 1940s, Jack Greening told CBC News.

Greening's late brother George, who died in 1990, flew the plane, nicknamed Old Barbeque.

The four-passenger aircraft, designed to fly executives across the country, was pressed into service for Saskatchewan's lake-dotted north when someone pulled the wheels off and strapped on a pair of floats.

Greening recalled a varied cargo, which included everything from sled dogs to barrels of fish.

Considering the rugged terrain and the often quickly changing weather, Greening said, many pilots, including his brother, developed a special relationship with their planes.

"The adversity, the bad weather that it brings you through and stuff," Greening said, "I don't know of too many pilots who were particularly conscious or proud of their skill, [but] they were proud of the good old airplane that 'got me home again.'"

After its lake-jumping days were over, people lost track of Old Barbeque. Eventually, it was bought by an American.

Jack Greening, left, reminisces with Carl Buck about an old bush plane that worked Saskatchewan's north in the 1940's. (David Shield/CBC) Ten days ago, owner Carl Buck flew to Anglin Lake, about 70 kilometres north of Prince Albert, from Minneapolis, Minn., to fulfill a promise he had made to Jack Greening to bring the plane back to Saskatchewan for a few days.

"[Jack] said I don't know how long I'm going to be on this earth, but I have a lot of old stories to share with you about Old Barbeque," Buck told CBC News, "And I just got goose bumps all over."

Greening said he was happy to see Old Barbeque one more time: "Just an indescribable feeling, I guess. Almost like you could relate it to the biblical story of the son coming home, you know?"

Great to hear that Carl took the 'ol girl back to Canada for the pilot to see her one last time. This is one of the few Wacos that still operates occasionally as a seaplane. My 1935 Waco YKC-S was on floats from 1935-1950 based in Washington State and owned by Lana Keurtzer of the famous Keurtzer Seaplane Base on Lake Washington

Two things:

1. - What is that item on her right leg? Looks to me like a small revolver.

2. - If you please, I am interested in seeing photos of the Guatemalan WACOs, before the acquisition of the VPF-7s .

This is the only survivor in Guatemala:

Thank you!

Tulio....yes, Bettie Lund is wearing a pistol strapped to her leg. She was getting ready to fly from California to Ohio for the National Air Races.

As far as Guatemalan Wacos, I can do some checking and let you know what the Company records say as far as airplanes delivered there. The biggest order was of course the VPF-7's. That is a GREAT photo of the airplane. Do you have any more? How about when they were new and in service? I have collected Waco photos 30+ years and only have two original shots of the VPF-7's and both were taken at the factory prior to delivery.

Interesting note, four of the airplanes still exist (including the one pictured). One (NC74835) is in flyable condition and is on loan to the Kalamazoo Air Museum in Michigan from owner Al Shimer of Gettysburg, PA, one is flying (NC17712) and is based about 15 minutes flying time from me and is owned by Mike Winblad and the third (major project-fuselage only) is in Wisconsin.

Waco:

Thank you for the data.

I do not have a serial for the #21, but I will do my best to obtain it soon.

Please PM your e-mail address and I will send you a couple of shots of the VPF-7s in service.

Saludos,

Tulio
