John,
FYI, she was "Aluminum Overcast" when you took that photo. It had the "AO" nose art on the left side. The name was given to the B-17 by Bill Harrison, George Enhorning, Max Hoffman and maybe a few others when they first purchased her back in the late 1970's. After a few years, they donated it to EAA. Bill Harrison may have been the major contributor at that time.

Thanks for the heads-up Jerry...it's been quite awhile since I took that pic as a teenager and for the life of me I can't remember seeing the Aluminum Overcast artwork on the other side. Too bad they didn't have Ritalin in those days!

These two pics of SJ were taken on 6/26/2005 at the former Kearney Army Air Field (now Kearney Municipal Airport, Nebraska). She is parked on the south apron of the last remaining WWII hangar on the field. This hangar was known as the Weight and Balance Hangar, and many of Sentimental Journey's sisters went through those doors for weighing prior to shipment to the combat zone. Kearney processed B-17s and crews for overseas shipment until being reassigned for B-29 Final Processing.
Image
A great '40s Big Band played for a hangar dance that evening--that is what the tables and chairs are being set up for.
Image
This pic was shot just after positioning the airplane in front of the hangar--the airport manager originally wanted to park the airplane in the hangar as a backdrop for the band, but no one could find a tug to position the plane properly.

Here is what Texas Raiders looked like back in 1972. I'll add more current pics of TR from when she made a stop here in Tyler, TX a few years ago.

And here is Piccadilly Lilly II at the same show in 1972 when she was still flying. She is now in the restoration queue at Chino.

Fairmont was a B-24 and B-29 Group Training Base with the distinction of being the original home of the 393rd Bombardment Squadron (VH) that was chosen as the combat unit of the 509th Composite Group.

To me the B-17 is the greatest airplane ever built. When I hear people say they are afraid to fly. I tell them then you will want to fly in a B-17 because a B-17 will NEVER let you down! :D :prayer: :prayer:

The movie Memphis Belle.....Geneseo 06.
