Back then you could go anywhere you wanted on the field and nobody cared.

Man, I remember those days. I went back this fall after a 10 year absence. Thanks to our own BDK I managed to get onto the field. Security sh*t like this is gonna kill off our passion. You've gotta let youngsters up close, that is how most of us started out in our prime...

Yea, no kidding! I remember driving out on the ramp next to the runway at Chino, just to take pictures of warbirds taking off and landing. You definitely can't do that now!
Anyone remember the POF ramp before the T-hangars were built that surround it now?
I have a lot of the same identical pictures that Jim took. Several of those were taken inside the Tallichet facilities.
Someday when I can find them, I'll post some pictures I have from Chino. I have some from about '78 onwards.

The scariest thing I remember is the Road Grader operator gone wacko incident. I remember standing at the Fighter Rebuilder's shop door looking south and a Hughes 500 was hovering at 50' over the FBO building next to the taxi up fueling area. It was around 3-400 feet away. Then you noticed a person step onto the skid aiming a rifle and heard shots. He was shooting down at a high angle. A road grader had been taken out of a local construction site by a worker who had some issues. He ended up at the airport with several Sherifs chasing him. Not much you can do to stop something that big but they tried. Everytime he had to turn to avoid running over a Sherif he ended up causing some damage like going through fences into yards. He also ran over a Piper as well. They trapped him near the fuel island where the chopper and gunman shot him up. The grader continued at idle and buried itself up to the cab into the FBO building.
