What's going on with the last Corsair (VMF-124) picture? What's the smoke coming from? Brakes locked up on one wheel?

It's not the Cat. You can see the Catapult track under the Corsair's port wing to the left.

Thanks for posting that pick of Capt Carey's plane, Jack. I always wondered how bad the damage was when he landed. Bad enough that both his legs were broken, but Americna planes could take a good slugging, eh?

It's not steam. Steam cats were developed by the Brits postwar. Our WWII cats were hydraulic. The smoke you see was to let the pilots see any potential crosswind on takeoff. The ship isn't always able to steam directly into the wind.

Did Corsairs take-off with that much flap?

If the wind is 010 degrees at 5 knots and the ship is going 10 knots heading north, making it own wind, than the x-wind factor would be?
