Do people join the military for the money?

One person said "you don't join the military for the money."
Then another person said just the opposite!

A good friend of mine joined 5-6 years ago. we had no real drive, job or what ever. the army gave him something like 20k if i remember. they turned his life around. he loves it. probably a carrier man now. they really did good with him.

When I enlisted (1983) we got no sign on bonus or anything. Every time I reenlisted back into aircraft maintenance I either just missed a bonus or was too soon to get a bonus. I enlisted because I love airplanes and I wanted to serve, that's why I enlisted.
