SecNav announced over the weekend that CVN-79 will be named 'John F. Kennedy' and his daughter Caroline will be the ship's sponsor. A good solid name but not real orginial but does keep with the trend of the new Ford class, a naval hero of WW2 that became President.

EDIT: When I posted I said it was CVN-78, that was wrong, it is CVN-79. Sorry.

CVN-78 Gerald Ford, under construction Newport News, VA
CVN-79 John F Kennedy

I would imagine in another 3 years (IIRC) when the name CVN-80, they will "recycle" the name Enterprise, since the CVN-65 "Big E" is slated for retirement sometime between 2012 - 2014. I can't see the Navy not naming another ship "Enterprise", as this name was easily the most famous Navy ship, in both the CV-6 and CVN-65 incarnations, of the last 80 years, as well as ranking right up there with the Constitution and Monitor for the most famous name of all time.

Nah....CVN-80 will probably be the USS Jimmy Carter.

BTW, who will be christening the Ford? Chevy Chase?

Not to mention the inevitable lobbying by Star Trek fans...

Saxman, I wouldn't bet against another Enterprise. Two famous ships, they might want to keep the name alive. Constitution and Arizona are the only two that I think will never be used again.

Driver, Chevy would make the launching worth attending but the Christening is done by the ship's sponsor and that is Ford's daughter. Can't be Carter as there is already a sub out there with his name.

Agent, another carrier Bush? Nah, too confusing. Give it a couple of generations.

bdk, come on man, give me a break, I will have to work on that thing, maybe after I retire.
