at least 10 tons / 700 million dollars today's value in silver bars was recovered yesterday off Ireland. the transport was torpedoed by a kriegsmarine u -boat. the silver was being transferred from the british colony in india back to England to finance the war effort. it was cool to watch them hose the bars off to reveal the british government hallmark seals.. the salvors get 80 %, the new royal heir / british government gets 20%. pretty nice work!!

i just finished watching 3 episodes of a programme titled "billion dollar wreck hunt" on channel 5 herein the uk. it covers the above story reported and the search for 2 other vessels including hms victory that went down in the mid 1700s stuffed to the gunnels with spanish gold. the recovery company apparently are struggling to get the uk government to offer permits to recover. given the massive loss of life on this wreck regardless of the gold thats there its perhaps not that surprising its taking them years to move that one forwards
the tv station has placed all 3 episodes on youtube..simply search for "billion dollar wreck hunt"
if you are into underwater wrecks, recoveries its well worth a watch in my opinion
