A place where restoration project-type threads can go to avoid falling off the main page in the WIX hangar. Feel free to start threads on Restoration projects and/or warbird maintenance here. Named in memoriam for Gary Austin, a good friend of the site and known as RetroAviation here. He will be sorely missed.

I think we should let Gary post the first nose art photos on WIX. He deserves it.
I know the temptation is great to post the first ones, but lets let him have the honor!

My Dad isn't going to get into Midland now until noon, so he'll miss the actual unveiling. :(

My hat goes off to you Gary....you are by far the most dedicated individual I've ever met! 8) Can't wait to see what the nose art looks like.

Gary,

Good Luck tomorrow.

Can't wait to be parked alongside this summer and "inspect" your work!

Kidding. I wish I knew how to do sheet metal as well as you.

Sure you dont want to come Nawth and do a little on our C-54 and C-97?

Kudos to you!

Kevin,
Do you relly think Gary has tottally lost his mind and would want to winter over in New York City? LOL

Just a quick "howdy" for all of y'all. Thanks for the nice comments, but the unveiling isn't until next week.

Okay, only kidding.

Anyway, I'm about to get the airplane out for some early morning engine runs/photo shoot, so I better get to it. It's likely going to be a busy day for me, so even though I appreciate Airdales' request that I be the one to post the new noseart, I don't mind if someone beats me to it. I'm not real sure if I'll even get to the computer anymore today.

Well, back to work....

Gary

Well done Gary and everyone else who has worked hard to transform Lil.

Good luck for the unveiling.

BRAVO ZULU Gary on a job well done.

You are by far one of the most dedicated and resilient people I know.

Just remember that 927 wouldn't be where she's at today if it wasn't for your talents, know-how and your direction with all the supportive volutnteers. Good-onya

To all those involved on this project I would like to say, thank you. It's because of people like you, selflessly working to keep this B-24 in the air and representative of our history that my children will be able to experience history instead of just reading about it.

Thank You

Shay

0555 PDT and no pictures yet? (it's like being the first one awake on Christmas Day :D )

Seriously, Gary, congratulations and thanks for all your effort, and the same to everyone who has helped out.

Just got off the phone with my Dad. He got the last seat on the last flight last night! He's at the hangar now. Said 927 is pulled just inside the hangar with 2 area of seating. Gary introduced him to the Squadron Commander. Gary asked if my Dad would help him pull down the paper since he was involved in the painting, so that's cool. Sure wish I could be there with them. He said it all looks great!

Seriously Gary,

Congratulations to you, and all the volunteer help that you received during the process of converting Diamond Lil back into what you are about to unveil to the public. All of you involved in the project should deservedly take a bow and the accolades of your efforts. :drink3: :drink3:

Its seems that the passion for these old horses has not diminished one iota given the postings on this thread alone. And you Gary are to be commended and congratulated for your efforts, perseverance, dedication, and innovation for all you have done. :drink3: :drink3:

A hearty "Well Done" doesn't seem to be enough. But the sincerity behind it for you is genuine and is passed along with the deepest respect. This is YOUR'S and '927's day Sir.....enjoy the day !!!!!

Respectfully,

Paul

I'll be kind of sad when this is all over. I've really enjoyed watching the progress on the B-24 via this thread all winter. Amazing job!

The nose art looks great Gary! I didn't get any pictures since I maanaged to just sneak over there from work, and wasn't prepared. I think ya'll will like the change. It really fits with the aircrafts history.
