b-17 wing intercooler removal

Hi Everyone,

I've been banging my head against the wall for months now trying to figure out how to get the inboard intercooler out of a b-17, we've removed the supercharger and most of the ductwork and plumbing around the intercooler area but for the life of me and the others working on it, we cant seem to figure out what bolts to remove to get the intercooler out of the A/C. I think we've taken out at least 10 bolts from various brackets that attach the unit to the various braces and ducts but it still wont budge.

Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure if this will help you or not, and you probably already have this, but here are shots of the maintenance manual and parts catalog for it. I hope this helps. If you need better copies let me know, I have them in PDF format and can email you the sections you need. The entire manuals are too large to email.

I always dreaded having to take those things out when we had Chuckie. I considered it when we had the inboard fuel tanks out last year doing the spar AD but didn't see a reason to at the time.

If they are the same as on the G-model I would suggest calling the Yankee Air Force and talking to Norm Erlikson he is or was the head of Maintenence....If Norms no longer there than ask for the B-17 crew cheif.
